What is an ATV Repair Manual and Why You Should Get One

If you’re an ATV enthusiast, you know that an off-road trike or quad requires regular maintenance and repair to remain in tip-top condition, so it’s ready to take to the trail when the need (or the want) arises.

While the engine and drivelines that power your ATV are generally simpler to work on than automotive or marine counterparts, you will still require a complete set of tools, and good information in order to do service or repair.  One of the most important things to have is information, and that comes in the form of a repair manual.  There are two types of repair manuals to choose from, and you might just find that you need them both:

Shop manual

The first is a manufacturer specific shop manual, which contains information, specifications, and very importantly, part identification using the manufacturer’s numbering system.  The shop manual is often purchased by shops that service that particular brand of machine, in order to assist their technicians.  The shop manual doesn’t contain any instructions, assuming that the person doing the work is a qualified mechanic.

Repair manual

An aftermarket repair manual, on the other hand, is a little more generic than the manufacturer’s shop manual.  It might cover several similar models from the same manufacturer, and it’s purpose is to provide instructions, not just raw information.  A shop manual might instruct the user to remove the carburetor.  A repair manual will provide information about how to go about doing so.

Depending on your level of experience, you will need one or both of these manuals to perform you own service and repair.  Working on your own ATV can save you considerable money over having service performed at a shop.  You are more likely to perform needed maintenance if you can do it yourself, because it won’t require taking your machine anywhere.  The result will be a better-maintained ATV that is less likely to give you problems on the trail.  As an added bonus, you will become much more familiar with your ATV, and in the event that a mechanical problem does arise while you are out hunting, fishing, or simply enjoying some rough ground, you are more likely to be able to fix it on the fly.

There’s nothing quite so satisfying as fixing your own equipment, and then having it perform flawlessly when you use it.  Proper documentation in the form of a shop or service manual can go a long way when it comes to getting the job done correctly, and when it comes to your ATV, there’s really no other way to do it.
